Students Participate in Spelling Bee

Students in 4th through 8th grade recently participated in the 9th Annual The Bee spelling bee sponsored by The Missourian.  Four representatives from each grade level, 20 students in all, have been practicing a long list of words after winning the classroom level competitions.  Students competed with words such as "allocation" and "felonious", as well as some that were easier, like "zebra".

Standing on stage in front of their classmates, the competition began.  Each student was given a word and had to spell it correctly.  If requested, they were provided with the definition, origin, and the word used in a sentence.   The eliminations took several rounds, and came down to 8th graders Riley L. and Corabella W.  The students battled through several words, but Riley came out on top by correctly spelling "masonry" and the final word "disinfect".

Riley will represent Lonedell School in the regional competition held at East Central College on April 27.  Students are provided a word list in the study guide to prepare for The Bee, and the competition words will come from that list – at least to a point. According to the official rules, if the judges are unable to determine a champion through the word list provided to the schools, they’ll pull out a “secret list” of words to use.

Participants were:  Tabitha A., Marien B., Kylie B., Neveah B., John C., Rae C., Dalton F., Amy J.,  Tyler J., Dell J., Riley L., Grayson L., Chris N., Cheyenne O., Carter S., Lane S., Sebastian W., Ryan W., and  Corabella W.
