Little Readers Become Little Authors

First Grade teachers, Melanie Friel and Amber Generally, recently held their annual Meet The Author event. Each first grader chose an animal that they wanted to read about and research. The classes worked on making their own non-fiction book about that animal during 3rd quarter.
After all of their research, students began to write about what they had learned. They wrote about the animal's habitat and diet. The books had to include several sections. There was a table of contents, a How To page, a Fascinating Facts page (facts from the book they were reading and from the internet), a Diagram of the animal, a Different Kinds page (which included real photographs and labels of different types of that animal), and a Meet the Author page.
The classes visited each other's Meet the Author day. Additionally, several parents/guests visited to read the books and get the newly famous authors' autographs. The students were very proud of their accomplishments and enjoyed their special day.
