Veterans Celebration Held

Each year, Lonedell School hosts a Veteran's Day Celebration.  Any veterans able to attend are encouraged to come and be honored by our students.  This year's event was held on Friday, November 10.  Dozens of veterans representing all branches of service were in attendance.  The honorees were escorted in to the sound of the Lonedell Band performing American Spirit March, led by Mrs. Terry Durgin.  The honor choir, the Treble Makers, sang the Star Spangled Banner led by Mrs. Mandi Miller.  The guests were welcomed by Mr. Wayne Dierker, Principal, who said what an honor it was to have these heroes in the presence of our students.

The event featured several students.  A Soldiers Poem was read by Jaden F., and three 8th grade students read their essays titled  American's Gift to My Generation.  Those students were Phoebe A., Ariel T., and Jenna U.  The Treble Makers performed American Tears.  The Multi Media Club created a video presentation that was shown as well.  During the Armed Forces Highlight, each service member rose during the playing of their branch's song.  As they stood, a student presented them with a flag.  St. Clair Junior ROTC members honored POW/MIA and demonstrated the meaning behind flag folding.

The students had worked the week of the event to raise money to help veterans by collecting 11 cents from those able to give.  The collection is done each year as part of The Power of 11 Cents.  The program demonstrates that giving a small amount can make a large difference.  Mrs. Kathy Vollmer presented a check in the amount of 68.47 to the St. Clair VFW.

Mr. James Howard, E-6 Staff Sergeant US Army/National Guard, spoke to the students and guests about the bond he felt to the soldiers he served with, the importance of honoring our flag and national anthem, and expressed thanks for the respect shown to soldiers.

After the event, veterans and their guests were treated to refreshments.
