STUCO & NJHS Enjoy Conferences

STUCO MASC CONFERENCE

Some lucky Student Council members recently traveled to the Missouri Association of Student Councils 71st Annual State Convention hosted by Lindbergh High School.  To be considered for attendance, students had to submit an application and were selected by a group of staff members, as there were a limited amount of spaces available.

During the conference, which was chaperoned by Mrs. Vollmer and Mr. Flora students had the opportunity to network with other Missouri student council members, listen to presentations, and generally have a ball.  The event is heavily supported by the Army ROTC, State Farm, Jostens, H3 Steel, as well as several private donors.  According to their website, MASC’s mission is to provide programs and resources that develop positive student leaders and advisors who will promote a quality school and community environment.

Listening to Power of Choices speakers Cara Filler and Steve Bollar discuss how simple decisions can make a lifelong difference for themselves and others was one of the highlights.  Students also took part in various workshops.  However, it definitely wasn't all work.  There were games, dances, music, food, and staying overnight in a hotel with your friends.  Mrs. Vollmer, who was recognized as the Middle School Advisor of the Year for the South Central Region, has been able to take students on this trip for two consecutive years.  "Our student council has been active for decades, but being involved in MASC has really taken us to a new level.  We've learned so much and are able to serve in new ways," stated Vollmer.

NJHS CONFERENCE

NJHS members recently attended the Missouri Association of National Honor Societies State Convention again this year. This conference was hosted by Ava High School.  The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

As part of the event, students learned about the theme, Lead With Honor, attended workshops, and heard an amazing keynote speaker, A'ric Jackson whose mission is to Teach, Inspire, and Encourage all those who hear him, and to take the challenge of helping others pursue their goals and dreams.  Of course, it wasn't all work.  Students got to meet other NJHS and NHS members from around the state, take part in bowling, swimming, and dancing just to name a view of the events.  These students also earned an overnight stay at the Tan-Tar-A Resort with their friends.

"We've attended this conference for many years, and it never fails to be an educational and fun event for our members," stated sponsor Mrs. Britton.

Attendance at neither of these conferences would have been possible without the support of volunteers, BK Bus, and everyone who donated to the multiple fundraisers held by these clubs.  We are very proud of these young people.
