Trashy Boat Challenge

In Mr. Flora's STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Agriculture and Math) class, 7th and 8th graders recently participated in the Trashy Boat Challenge.  Students began with a discussion of the types of boats that are used every day such as V-bottoms, Semi-V bottoms, and flat bottoms.  Students then analyzed how sail boats and Caravels worked and their designs.

After learning about all of the different styles and mechanisms, the challenge was on. Students put their creativity to the test by developing a boat powered by wind.  They used everyday materials that would normally be thrown in the trash.  Items included soda/water bottles, foam, milk cartons, paper, cardboard, straws, tape, and toilet paper/paper towel rolls.

Students not only had to produce a boat that stayed afloat and sailed but had to race them across five foot pool of water and back.  Each class had a champion and an overall speed champion of 6.4 seconds. After the races, students regrouped in the Science Lab to discuss what they learned during the challenge.  They discussed how they would re-engineer their boats for next time.  "This is one of many exciting activities that students get to participate in on a daily basis in STEAM class.  We are really enjoying the time to stretch our knowledge and have hands on experiences," stated Flora.
